Vauxhall Astra
The photos also show what it looked like in its previous life as a police response car. This Astra was being retired from front-line duties with North Yorkshire Police in 2019. Instead of sending it to auction as normal, the workshops converted it into a first responder car to give it a new lease of life. This arrangement was facilitated by NYP and NYFRS sharing workshop facilities.
When the vehicle entered service with NYFRS in summer 2019 it was initially used for transport duties before being properly used as a first responder car.
A sister vehicle is YJ12 BDZ which is exactly the same; an ex-police vehicle converted to a first responder.

This Astra served the North part of York all of its working life from 2013 to 2019. It was used by Safer Neighbourhood officers (PCSOs) and was a firm favourite with children at events where they got to sit in it and play with the blue lights and siren. Despite having a new gearbox fitted in 2018 it became less and less reliable. A severe engine breakdown in spring 2019 brought its police life to an end. It was replaced with a Peugeot 308 (YJ69 FMK) in autumn 2019.

It is fitted with small flashing blue lights to the front and small blue and red flashing lights to the rear. The tractor is brought to events by a farming machinery company on a low loader and they also store it between events.

Tactial Response Vehicle. Two example of the six that were introduced in 2017. They are based at Harrogate, Malton, Northallerton, Ripon, Tadcaster and Scarborough. The appliances are crewed by three staff rather than four or five in a larger appliance. They are slightly smaller and lighter than atraditional appliance at 10 tonnes rather than 15. While some counties have gone for mucyh smaller vehicles based on a van, NYFRS have gone for larger vehicles to allow the flexibility of carrying up to five people and more equipment. Their introduction was marred by resistence from the FBU and negative news stories that they were not as good as a full fire appliance, despite looking the same to any casual observer.

These scenes capture the final moments of a police vehicle as it is engulfed in flames on 26 August 2017. Two officers were on a blue light run on the A168 near Thirsk when the car suffered a catastrophic engine failure. Both officers left the vehicle and watched from a safe distance as the car went up in flames. There was nothing they could do to stop the fire. While the blue lights were still flashing, the fire spread and thick black smoke swept across the carriageway. Fire crews from Thirsk and Ripon responded to the call and used two hose reel jets and four breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire. By then the vehicle was just a metal shell and was totally written off.
