BG58 VEK This is the first safety camera van used by North Yorkshire Police. It is a Ford Transit and was introduced in 2011 as a trial to target speeding and accident blackspots.

YB06 TYO This Citroen Dispatch van is used by North Yorkshire Police for driver training duties. When being used for blue-light training it is normal for it to have the lights and siren permanently on, irrespective of traffic levels, and travelling just under the speed limit.

This means that the dogs can stay cool in the summer even if locked in the car. The engine can remain running to power the air con using the Runlock system. If any unauthorised person entered the car, the engine would stop if any of the pedals were depressed. It also has the nationally recognised triangle symbol on the roof

It is not fitted with a siren but the green flashing light can aid a doctor’s progress to a casualty. The green lights are used about five times per week to attend emergencies.

YJ53 EKT This North Yorkshire Police Volvo V70 T5 is used for road policing duties. It is one of a small number to be fitted with a roof-mounted infrared light (see inset). This is used in conjunction with a rear-facing ANPR camera that can read vehicles’ registration plates far better than a regular camera. The Pips Technology infrared camera can read plates in heavy rain, fog, sunlight glare and headlight glare. IR is invisible to the human eye and is reflected by number plates in the same way that visible light is.
