L402 SKV This VW Transporter is one of St. John Ambulance’s Command Units. In the command units are desks for the Silver Officer (On Scene Command) and the Radio Control. More modern vehicles have satellite dishes and aerials on top.

This is a rear view of the Command Unit showing that it’s based at Warwickshire’s headquarters.

This is a concept fire vehicle that is based on an Iveco. It is produced by Chameleon and is used for fire response work in hostile environments. The cab is surrounded by a strong cage structure with a red and blue flashing light on top. The rear tips and the fold-down sides have battenburg markings on both sides.

A close up of what you would expect to be a water monitor on the roof. It is in fact a 7.62mm General Purpose Machine Gun! The vehicle has the capability for this gun to be mounted and used, but use in the UK is very unlikely.

This 1997 Jaguar XJ8 was specially built to support the Thrust SSC land speed record attempt. At the time it was regarded as the fastest fire engine on the planet. The rear seats have been removed to accommodate the foam tank.

An overhead look at it showing the roof callsign “Firechase”. After the successful record attempt, the vehicle saw further service at Silverstone race circuit.

WX59 GWG This is an Iveco Daily Incident Command unit that is operated by Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service. Inside is an array of high resolution mapping systems and digital radio and tracking equipment to enable the senior fire officer to control serious incidents in the county of Wiltshire. Notice the red ends to the roof light bar, as this is one of the few vehicles on UK roads that is allowed to show red light to the front.

B551 RLP This is a custom-made Boughton fire and rescue appliance used at Tresco Heliport. It has a foam monitor on the roof and very high-profile tyres.

The front view. Notice how the headlights have been moved to the bumper and their previous location replaced with blue flashing lights.

The rear view. In three corners of the roof are blue rotating beacons, and in one an amber beacon.

P462 WCG This is a 1996 Nissan Terrano II used by HM Coastguard on the island of Tresco, Isles of Scilly. Still operational in 2011, this 4×4 is one of a small number of motorised vehicles on the island. A small white tube can be seen connected to the front which keeps the battery topped up.

The rear view.

This is a trailer towed by the Terrano above. It is in the usual Coastguard colours and carries additional rescue equipment. If required it can be towed by other vehicles.

ECV 854V This is a Landrover Series III 109 which has been converted into a fire vehicle by Charmichael. It is part of the Isles of Scilly Fire Service’s fleet based on the island of St. Martins. It is a front line appliance, the only one on the island, despite it’s age of 31 years when photographed in 2011.

The rear view. It has no battenburg markings or even a stripe down the side. Two small blue strobe lights are fitted on the roof along with two tone horns and ladders.

A closer look at the passenger door. An old livery for Cornwall County Fire Brigade is shown, despite the vehicle belonging to the Isles of Scilly Fire Service. This is because the Islands broke away from Cornwall for fire provision and the vehicle has not been re-liveried. This made it the smallest statutory fire service in the UK and is operated on a 100% retained basis.

This is the Star of Life, an ambulance boat used around the Isles of Scilly …

This is the Star of Life, an ambulance boat used around the Isles of Scilly off the Cornish coast. It was new in 2003 when it cost £260,000. The boat is vital to transport casualties from the many islands to the only hospital on St. Mary’s.

The Star of Life works alongside Cornwall’s air ambulance. When the air ambulance is not available, due to maintenance or fog for example, the sea-going catamaran boat can transport serious cases to the mainland at Penzance. It can travel the 28 miles at up to 25 knots.

Inside the 36-foot boat is all the normal ambulance equipment including defibrillator, oxygen and pain relieving drugs. It is manned by an emergency medical technician and a coxswain from the South Western Ambulance Service.

The boat has five pairs of folding doors around the vessel that allow the smooth transition of a walking or stretcher casualty from land to sea. The Star of Life replaced the Santa Warna that previously served the Scillonian archipelago.
