WNE 371L This is a Reynolds Broughton Chubb ‘Pathfinder’ airfield …



WNE 371L This is a Reynolds Broughton Chubb ‘Pathfinder’ airfield fire appliance seen at the Yorkshire Air Museum, at Elvington near York. Although a museum, the airfield occasionally receives some flights. The appliance is mainly there to protect the exhibits.



It was initially used by Manchester International Airport Fire service. It is built on a ‘Griffin’ 6-wheel drive high performance chassis at has a top speed of about 60 mph. This vehicle is immense. It measures 37’4″ (12.9m) long, 10′ (3.4m) wide and 13’7″ (5.0m) high.



This vehicle is design for a crew of four, but can be operated by only one person. This model dates back to 1972. The pathfinder was awarded the Design Council’s Engineering award in 1974 in respect of its then advanced design.

B233 XMY Also to be found at Elvington is this 1984 Range Rover rapid intervention vehicle. It is ultimately quicker than the Pathfinder, but can only carry a limited amount of supplies.



It is different to a normal range rover by having an additional set of driven wheels, making it 6-wheel drive. It is powered by a Rover V8 engine, and had a separate water pump.

BX10 LBL This is a three-wheeled Piaggio MP3 motorbike belonging …



BX10 LBL This is a three-wheeled Piaggio MP3 motorbike belonging to the Metropolitan Police, London. It is fitted with blue flashing lights and is usually driven by PCSOs working for the Safer Transport Command. The blue light are only used when stationary to warn motorists of its presence by the side of the road or to protect a scene, as the riders aren’t response trained. It is one of dozens that were introduced from June 2010.

There are two derivatives in use by the Met, the 400LT and the 250IE. The larger engined model requires a category B1 driving licence and the smaller engined model only requires a restriced category A licence.



The bike merging back into traffic. You can see how narrow it is compared to cars. The bikes require minimal additional training to ride as they can be ridden without having a motorbike licence. They are also much more environmentally friendly than cars.

BX10 LHE is a Met Police Piaggio MP3. It is parked up with its blue lights flashing as part of a temporary road closure. This is normally the only time you can see the blue lights (and red to rear) activated, as the PCSO riders are not response trained and are not permitted to use them when the vehicle is moving.

YJ10 ADU This is an Iveco Eurocargo that is run by West …



YJ10 ADU This is an Iveco Eurocargo that is run by West Yorkshire Police as an underwater and specialist search unit. It carries all of the necessary equipment and facilities for police divers.

YK55 EYT This is one of West Yorkshire Police’s underwater search units. Shown is a Land Rover Defender which behind the double cab has bespoke bodywork for storage. Special features of this vehicle are the metalwork on the bonnet, A-pillar mounted snorkel and small blue flashing lights on the front grille only.

This is a photograph of one of Hampshire Police’s launches on the Solent. This example is called Sir James Scott and it carries a similar livery to the rest of Hampshire’s land-going fleet. It is fitted with a double blue flashing light and its aerial identifier code is ‘MAR 3’.

A police officer in an orange Humber rigid inflatable boat watches out for approaching vessels while a colleague scours the river bed for evidence from a crime. The flag that is shown (reproduced below) alerts mariners to divers in the vicinity.

The police diver surfaces with the remains of a mobile ‘phone that has been thrown from a bridge. The police examine it before bagging it up to be sent for laboratory analysis.

YJ53 ENL This Ford Iveco Tector truck is the underwater search unit for North Yorkshire Police, based at Fulford, York. This truck is a very tall 4×4, 16 ton monster, with three steps up into the cab. In the rear is storage for diving equipments as well as a kitchen and showers. The RIBs are towed by a separate vehicle. It is a vast improvement on its rusty 1990 predecessor which it replaced in spring 2004.

A collection of trucks used for underwater search equipment transportation. They have congregated at Northumbria Police’s Jarrow Marine Unit for a simulated rescue at near-by Tynemouth.

These two views shows the Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire vehicles. There are no standard colours, schemes, liveries, vehicles or equipment carried. Each force decides what it needs or can afford. Some areas do not have such services and have to draft in neighbouring force’s underwater search officers if they are needed.

G176 YEF This is the Underwater Search Unit for North Yorkshire Police, pictured in 2000. This ageing vehicle is more like a minibus than a van, and is used not just in the N.Yorks. county but also in neighbouring counties where such units are unavailable.

Z-999-MAN This Mini is used by the Isle of Man Fire Brigade as a publicity vehicle. All of the bodywork is given over to flame effects and their sponsor’s logo Zurich Insurance. Small blue flashing light are fitted to the front grille and rear parcel shelf.
