T324 HGT is a London Ambulance Service LDV front-line ambulance.

LJ53 BVB The LDV above is joined by a newer LAS sister vehicle. The yellow 2003 Mercedes ambulance shows the revised livery for yellow LAS vehicles.

X438 GGO is another LAS LDV ambulance. By 2000 the yellow stripe has been replaced by a double strip of battenburg marks.

FXC 831L Here are two shots of a rare 1972 Range Rover belonging to the Stratford-upon-Avon division of St. John Ambulance based in Warwickshire. This vehicle was a original prototype from Range Rover and has a higher than normal back. Only seven prototypes were made and there are only two left. The other one has been converted into a camper van.

M906 TKP is a Ford Transit-based ambulance run by Kent Ambulance NHS Trust. The bodywork is by Customline.

G400 AVC This photograph shows the front and nearside of a 4×4 Landrover operated by Severn Ambulance & Medical Services, a small ambulance group that operate on the outskirts of Bristol & South Gloucestershire. Notice the additional amber flashing beacon for use on airfields.

V631 KNO This was one of three four-wheel-drive Chevrolet Suburban ambulances bought by Surrey Ambulance Service. The vehicles were based at the rural locations of Cranleigh, Haselmere and Godstone.

S420 STW is a GMC Chevrolet Suburban Silverado ‘Wheeled Coach’ Ambulance. It is being used by Norfolk Priority Care Medical Services for intensive care transfer work. Four shots of the vehicle are shown which is temporarily in the Surrey Ambulance livery – it’s previous owners – just like the vehicle above.

OW03 EFX This is a St. John ‘Cobra’ 4×4 response car, based on the Nissan Patrol. This is the first example of this type of emergency vehicle, belonging to the Halifax and Brighouse Division who use it as a first response vehicle as well as for kit carrying and towing.

YS51 JYP is a South Yorkshire Ambulance Service Landrover Discovery.

Y746 KET is a Vauxhall Astra estate ambulance rapid response car from Manchester.

HX03 NCU and A78 XKU, On the right is a 1983 Mercedes ambulance from the Ashbourne Division of Derbyshire St. John Ambulance. To its left is a vehicle 20 years younger: a 2003 £48,000 Renault Crusader which replaces the Merc.

P513 PRH is a TENYAS Mercedes Sprinter ambulance with wrap-around green and yellow checker livery.

GY52 ZDW This Honda ambulance car is from East Midlands Ambulance Service and is used as a response manager’s car.

This Mercedes-Benz Vario 814D truck has been converted to an control unit for the Scottish Ambulance Service. It has a pull-out canopy to the side and blue, amber and green & white checker flashing lights on the roof to denote it’s control status.

EU03 MSX This is an 2003 Ford Mondeo estate ambulance car demonstrator.

This is a British-built Honda CR-V rapid response ambulance car.

This is part of an exercise in responding to casualties in the aftermath of a ‘dirty bomb’ attack. Personnel in protective suits and masks wash wounded casualties and transfer them from the ‘dirty’ end of the inflatable hospital to the ‘clean’ end via a rolling platform.



The casualty is transferred to a clean spinal board and further treatment takes place. The inflatable building takes minutes to set up anywhere and is illuminated from outside via the translucent roof. The walking wounded and other contaminated persons go through a series of showers that are run in parallel to this facility.

This is a Scottish Ambulance Service VW LT46 TDi with bodywork by UV Modular.

This silver Vauxhall Astra paramedic car by MacNellie is equipped with an integrated computer. A screen is integrated into the centre console and any packages can be run on it. This demonstrator used to be liveried as a Metropolitan Police car.

HW03 GGK This Jumbulance (multi-purpose jumbo ambulance) is a huge 2003 Mercedes Benz 814D truck. It is liveried in luminous-yellow Isle of Wight colours and has bodywork by WAS. We have been infomed that this ambulance has been of the road due to an accident where a 4×4 driver hit it. He told the police that he could not see it coming around a roundabout!

BJ03 CZT This yellow unmarked MG ZTT 190 is a demonstrator from Premier Hazard. It has a 2.5 litre engine and clear lenses on it’s blue flashing lights behind the grille and on the roof.

This is a another VW LT46 turbo diesel but with bodywork by Proline.

RO02 VBE This Iveco Daily (with a WAS body) is deployed as a Surrey Ambulance Service Incident Support Unit. Notice the huge communications antenna and floodlights sprouting from the roof of this 4 cylinder, 146 bhp, 6-speed Iveco.

This is a silver Honda Stream estate ambulance car.

KE03 YHG This 2003 Iveco Daily ambulance has Wilker bodywork and is liveried in Royal Berkshire colours.

A look in the back of a WAS version of the Daily shows how a long ramp allows easy access for a laden stretcher.

An odd sight to end this section with: the back of an ambulance. This is an example of MacNellie’s bodywork with a small black skirt around the base rather than mounting it onto a chassis.

NK03 GWM is one of a number of Ford Focus estates that the North East Ambulance Service use for rapid response work.

P58 GCM The ambulance shown is a British Red Cross (Lancashire Branch) UVG Premia bodied Ford Transit 2.5 Diesel. The livery is a mixture of ex-Mersey Regional Ambulance checker stripes with a full yellow & red body stripe and rear red stripe added to meet Red Cross standards. The “RED LANCS ONE” markings are the vehicle’s radio callsign as recognised by the local ambulance service.

D918 FHP is the Yorkshire Air Museum Ambulance Service’s first ambulance, based on the Elvington site. This vehicle has now been decomissioned as YAMAS has folded.

M403 RPY This TENYAS Ford Transit ambulance has a bad case of tin worm, but was still operational in 2003.



The rear view of this familiar-shaped vehicle. Close inspection of the writing on the sides shows that the word ‘Cleveland’ has been deleted from in front of ‘ambulance’, but not replaced by the new supertrust’s name, even though the merger happened in 1999!

F115 SWS is a Mercedes Benz Avon Ambulance Service Equipment Support Unit.

This is a re-liveried Fiat Ducatto from Advanced Medical Ambulance Service Limited.

This is a Toyota Hi-Ace Power Van high dependency unit also owned by Advanced Medical Services. It is used for long distance patient transfers.

A215 MWY is a Landrover Series 3 being used by St John Ambulance in Sheffield. It was originally owned by WYMAS as a general runaround, recovery and back up communications unit. It was sold to SJA for £1.

YJ03 AUF This is a WAS-bodied Mercedes ambulance from TENYAS’s fleet. A large order of these vehicles was placed with WAS from a consortium of Northern-England ambulance services. They were delivered in 2003.

YD52 TWF The rear view of an identical 52-reg ambulance, with another in the background. TENYAS’s ambulances had problems when first delivered with a hydraulic lift they had fitted to the rear of the vehicle. It hung below the vehicle and caught on speed humps in trials.

W715 LWP A silver Vauxhall Vectra ambulance car from Cambridgeshire Ambulance Service.

SG52 UJF This picture is of a Ford Mondeo RRU at Coatbridge Ambulance Station, Scotland.

SB 72 AA and H158 WYT, A RAF ambulance 6-wheeled Pinzgauer alongside a RAF 1990 Ford Transit ambulance. The Pinzgauer is a tried-and-tested 30-year-old design that allows access to rugged, slippery, boggy and steep areas with ease.
