Here we have the fifth generation of the Vauxhall Astra is estate form. This particular model has been developed by Vauxhall Special Vehicles.

This is the 2005 model specification of the Jaguar S-Type. This particular model is powered by a twin turbo 2.7 litre V6 diesel engine.



The rear view of the S-Type. The car is fitted out in a generic police livery but is fully operational.

This Peugeot Expert used by Merseyside Police is in a striking yellow livery. It is a mobile camera unit that is used as part of the ‘street safe’ scheme.

Another yellow police vehicle is this Ford Transit used by Hampshire Police.

B211 WPX is a preserved 1985 Volvo 2404GLT which was used by Hampshire Constabulary. It wears an extremely plain livery when compared to the battenburg vehicle above. Two blue rotating beacons are mounted on a roof rack.



The rear view. The car is powered by a turbo charged 2.3 litre petrol engine with a manual gearbox. This would have given the car a top speed of about 113 mph before the 1980’s light bar and police stop signs were attached.

AD05 CXC is a 2005 Ford Mondeo Hatchback. This particular car is a demonstrator vehicle which is loaned to police forces by Ford.

This is another Mondeo that is used as a demonstrator vehicle. This time the car is estate form and with a base paint colour of white instead of silver.

We now have a second generation Ford Focus estate. Although in the livery for the Northern Constabulary, it still strangely carries the Ford Demonstrator logo in its rear side window.

This mark six Ford Fiesta is used by Greater Manchester Police. The strangest feature of this cars livery is its unusual blue roof.

Next, we have a 2006 model year Range Rover demonstrator vehicle.

This is a silver LDV Maxus operated by West Midlands Police.



The rear view of this van. This type was voted as Van of the Year 2005 by the Professional Van and Light Truck Magazine.

BP04 NYF is a heavily modified black armoured Land Rover Defender 110 used by Staffordshire Police. It features extensive modifications to the bonnet sides and roof of the vehicle, leaving room for only two small blue lights on its front bull bar.



The interior view shows us the practical rear bench seating and communication equipment mounted on the dashboard.

This is a police demonstrator vehicle of the 2005 Nissan Pathfinder SUV. From the front, we can see the low profile roof light bar and additional LED lights mounted on the grill.



From this view, we can see the full battenburg livery on the side of the vehicle. It also carries additional police wording in the rear side windows.



The rear shot of this 4×4. The rear glass window can be opened independently of the rear tailgate.

This Lexus RX300 demonstrator vehicle features the half battenburg livery unlike the Nissan above. However, it is devoid of any side police markings. It also features an ultra slim clear roof light bar.

This Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII 260 is fully kitted out for Police use, but unusually does not carry and light bar on its roof.



It is powered by a turbo charged four cylinder petrol engine, producing 260 BHP. The power is transmitted to the road through a rally developed four wheel drive system.

YK05 EDU This is a 2005 Vauxhall Astra in North Yorkshire’s battenburg livery.



Here is the rear shot of the same car. Notice how the livery and Crimestoppers information has been moulded around the shape of the bodywork at the rear.

LX05 EEU This in an equivalent Met Astra in silver.

P966 XHG Here is an unusual sight – a Met police Vectra with a black bag over its light bar. This is because it is a privately-owned car used for filming. It cannot be legally used on the roads with the light bar or ‘police’ wording showing.

P787 GDA Another film car is this Met BMW. It’s use is more obvious with the ‘film car’ sign on the roof, placed there by the television company Granada. This photo was taken at the studios where ‘Family Affairs’ and ‘The Bill’ are filmed.

PE02 GCX This Metropolitan police Ford Fiesta doesn’t look unusual in any way: but it is another film car. Notice how it has the same roof number (01) as all of the other cars around it. This is the national identifier code for the Met.

LX04 LLG This is a Mercedes Benz Vito 112 cdi van used by the Met on London’s streets.

Y904 PMX The City police also use Mercedes Benz Vitos on London’s streets. This example differs from the Met one above in many ways, including livery and make of blue lights.

N204 OYL This LDV riot van is one of a number of identical vehicles that the City police have.

Y943 PVS This is a head-on shot of a City of London Police Vauxhall Omega. Notice the small Crimestoppers advert on the bonnet.



Y945 PVS This is the the rear view of sister vehicle ‘943’.

Y901 PMX Here is a Mercedes M270 belonging to the City of London Police. It has battenburg markings and has the City crest on the sides. The yellow spots on all sides indicate that it is used as an armed response unit.

FP51 OLR This is a 2001 Mercedes E-class estate. It has the same City Police livery as the M-class above.

LX51 GHZ A Met police Range Rover on a blue light run makes progress through London traffic.

NX53 AYD This is a Cleveland police Volvo S60.

RO04 EWD This Cleveland motorbike is covered in blue and yellow checkers, similar to the blue and yellow rectangles seen on larger vehicles. Two traffic officers stand in the background.

YN05 OUF This is a South Yorks. Land Rover Defender in a rural setting – to which it is ideally suited.

PX04 DXN This is a Cumbria Police Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII, or ‘Evo 8’ for short. It is a very fast and agile car that is used for traffic policing on the motorways and twisty country roads of Cumbria.

NX53 JVZ This VW is with Cleveland Police as a cctv and crime prevention van. It does not have any blue lights as it usually stays in one area. It has a high telescopic mast with a video camera on top. The nearside also has a canopy and can be formed into a police information point.

Cumbria police also operate this silver Honda Blackbird 1100. It looks to be a temporary addition to the fleet because of the lack of blue lights on it. It is often used as an ice-breaker to talk to motorcyclists and would only patrol alongside another police bike.

Here we have one of West Yorkshire Police’s forward command Mercedes Sprinters. The vehicles are equipped with satellite communication facilities to enable secure communications.

NX51 LDN This Cleveland Police VW Transporter is being used to transport equipment relating to collision investigations. The traffic officers are surrounded by police signs, cones, theodolites and floodlights.

PN03 BXE This is North Yorkshire’s mobile major incident unit. Notice the satellite dish on the roof.

PN03 BWX Here is a North Yorks. dog unit Peugeot Expert. Previously seen unmarked, it has now been liveried in yellow and blue squares. It has blue lights on the front grille only, and a siren.

YJ54 VLX It is not often you see a police car with some ladders strapped to the roof! Here a tactical planning unit is transporting ladders as part of a security operation.

Y492 DCH A Ford Iveco community police office from North Yorkshire Police. Its livery is very sparse compared to its sister mobile police stations.

This is a semi-overt black Range Rover used by the Metropolitan Police’s royalty protection team (SO14). It is one of a fleet of identical Range Rovers which are used to protect royalty at home and abroad, visiting foreign royalty and royal buildings.



The rear view of another from the fleet. The temporary blue light bar (with police wording) is fixed to the roof rails and wired through the door seal. The Met logos are magnetic. The means the car can be quickly converted between covert and semi-overt guises depending on its use. The registration plates have been digitally disguised due to the work of these vehicles.

This is a Vauxhall Vectra 3.2, capable of 159 mph, as proven by PC Milton in a court case as he ‘familiarised himself’ with his new police car.

PX03 CCN This is a Cumbria Constabulary Ford Transit personnel / prisoner transport vehicle. The rear section (without windows) houses a caged area for prisoners. Notice the short blue light bars at diagonally opposite corners of the roof, along with two directional white spot lights in the other corners.

SV05 CXP This 2005 Jaguar X-type estate is in service with Grampian Police.

LM53 OJA is a silver BMW used by the City of London Police.

Y907 PMX This is an example of a 2001 personnel carrier belonging to the City Police in London. It is a white Mercedes Sprinter van with single yellow stripe down the sides. It has a riot grille and two blue light bars.

N206 OYL This is an equivalent vehicle the above, but dating from 1996. It is an LDV with an identical livery.

YW52 LLP This Humberside Proton Wira has had the force’s non-emergency telephone number added to the side: 0845 60 60 222. Also notice the flashing lights mounted on the rear parcel shelf.

NA52 AJX is a long wheel base Ford Transit personnel carrier from Northumbria Police.

S628 CRO is a Vauxhall Omega and BF02 OWZ is a Subaru Impreza Turbo photographed at the Yorkshire TV studios in Leeds. They are used for filming purposes and are not real Police cars. Both vehicles have their blue lights covered up and tape across their Police markings.
