GJ51 EGG Infastructure Training and Assistance Projects Vauxhall Zafira emergency response / rescue vehicle. The organisation is involved Community Emergency Planning in the UK and has other projects abroad. The car carries a personalised plate of the founder J. Slegg.

GV13 VJO, GX14 GYH Adur and Worthing Councils beach patrol vehicles. The ATV is fitted with a flashing blue light. The vehicles cover almost 11 miles of coastline.

Northumberland Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority fisheries patrol vessel St Aidan. Costing £700k and first launched in August 2015, the boat is a 16m long catamaran. It is used for fisheries enforcement, environmental studies and seabed surveying. It covers six miles into the North Sea from the border with Scotland at Berwick to its base is at the mouth of the River Tyne at North Shields.

HMS Dasher (P280) has a blue light fitted to the mast; the sister vessel alongside doesn’t. HMS Dasher is an Archer-class patrol and training boat belonging to the Royal Navy.

Home Office Immigration Enforcement VW Transporters and Mercedes Sprinters. The Immigration Enforcement vehicles are marked up in light blue and dark blue battenburgs and carry prominent Home Office branding. They do not have any audible or visual emergency warning devices fitted.

The most common use for the vehicles is to take enforcement officers to pre-planned operations where they raid premises suspected of harbouring people who should not be in the country. This could be a restaurant or factory for example.

A Chrono Patrol car used at the 2015 Warped North v South Paintball Festival at the Defence Training Estate, Swynnerton, Staffordshire. It is used off road on army training areas to check velocity of the paintball guns to make sure they conform to the rules of paintball using a chronograph and are safe to operate.

NA09 DDN A grey Land Rover Defender that is operated by Northumberland Inshore Fisheries & Conservation Authority. It is towing a trailer carrying a fast twin-engined fisheries patrol boat. The organisation was previously know as The Northumberland Sea Fisheries Committee from 1890-2011.

This JCB seems to have all bases covered with an amber flashing light, a green flashing light and blue flashing lights fitted in addition to the normal driving lights.

TRL 319 This 2007 Volvo V70 D5 is covered in bright red and orange decals to make it stand out on the roads. It is used by the Department for Transport’s Transport Research Laboratory for collision investigation work. It carries a personalised registration plate and a full-width amber light bar. The team use the car to analyse road collisions and provide expert witness accounts.

The Canal and Rivers Trust use this Orkadian 20 vessel called Yorkshire Ranger to patrol the waterways. It still carries the old branding of ‘British Waterways’.

FL56 UNR This is a Dog Control Ford Transit Connect that is operated by ‘Community Protection’ in Nottingham. This police-style service is a collaboration between Nottingham City Council and Nottingham Police.

Closest to the camera is St Oswald, a fisheries patrol vessel based in North Shields. It carries a fast rigid inflatable boat to quickly approach fishing boats and climb aboard for inspections.

Moored alongside it is a Royal Navy vessel HMS Example, a patrol and training vessel attached to the Northumbria University Royal Naval Unit. HMS Example is part of the 1st Patrol Boat Squadron (1PBS).

LK56 KJF An unusual use for green flashing lights is shown here on these two cars on the Crown Estate in Windsor. The wardens’ cars are a Ford Fiesta and a Vauxhall Astra. The Fiesta in the foreground also has two white spotlights on the roof.

14576 This Land Rover Defender is used by the Civil Defence service on the island of Guernsey. On the roof is an amber light bar, a green rotating beacon and a white searchlight. Green flashing beacons are permitted on Guernsey for all voluntary emergency services when responding to calls, including when travelling to their base for a call out.

53802 This car is believed to have been used for a multi-country ramshackle rally. It carries a blue light bar that has been covered up and ‘Mello Yello’ advertising.

11785, 11784 In this action shot, two motorbikes are escorting a large load using red flashing lights. They are both Honda Deuvilles belonging to Guernsey Outriders (a division of St Peter Port Service Ltd) who have a contract with the Guernsey government to provide vehicle escort services.



A closer look at one of the escort motorbikes. The company operate three motorbikes and a marked-up van. All use red flashing lights all-round.



The rear view. The riders are all special constables, trained in the specific role they carry out only. This gives them the power to direct traffic on Guernsey narrow winding roads.

12452 A look at one of Guernsey Outriders’ Honda Deuvilles. Red flashing lights were chosen as the police weren’t keen on blues being used and ambers would not have the desired impact to stop oncoming traffic quickly. A change in law was implemented to make the front-facing red flashing lights legal.
