Three of the Civil Protection fleet in Stoke Newington, London, posing in front of their underground control centre. The vehicles are CSV05, a Citroen Dispatch response vehicle; CSV01, a Renault Master Forward Control Point command centre; CSV04, a Mercedes Sprinter Emergency Logistics vehicle used for carrying everything from rest centre equipment in steel cages, to mobile generators or any other humanitarian relief equipment.

Used as a security vehicle in rural Lincolnshire. It is parked at the side of the road in police-style colours with a blue light bar fitted. Illuminated blue lights are placed on a post right next to it. It slows traffic on a long straight stretch of road due to it looking so much like a police vehicle from a distance.

Northumberland Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority

Northumberland Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority fisheries patrol vessel St Aidan. Costing £700k and first launched in August 2015, the boat is a 16m long catamaran. It is used for fisheries enforcement, environmental studies and seabed surveying. It covers six miles into the North Sea from the border with Scotland at Berwick to its base is at the mouth of the River Tyne at North Shields.

Home Office Immigration Enforcement VW Transporters and Mercedes Sprinters. The Immigration Enforcement vehicles are marked up in light blue and dark blue battenburgs and carry prominent Home Office branding. They do not have any audible or visual emergency warning devices fitted.

The most common use for the vehicles is to take enforcement officers to pre-planned operations where they raid premises suspected of harbouring people who should not be in the country. This could be a restaurant or factory for example.

TRL 319 This 2007 Volvo V70 D5 is covered in bright red and orange decals to make it stand out on the roads. It is used by the Department for Transport’s Transport Research Laboratory for collision investigation work. It carries a personalised registration plate and a full-width amber light bar. The team use the car to analyse road collisions and provide expert witness accounts.

FL56 UNR This is a Dog Control Ford Transit Connect that is operated by ‘Community Protection’ in Nottingham. This police-style service is a collaboration between Nottingham City Council and Nottingham Police.

Closest to the camera is St Oswald, a fisheries patrol vessel based in North Shields. It carries a fast rigid inflatable boat to quickly approach fishing boats and climb aboard for inspections.

Moored alongside it is a Royal Navy vessel HMS Example, a patrol and training vessel attached to the Northumbria University Royal Naval Unit. HMS Example is part of the 1st Patrol Boat Squadron (1PBS).

14576 This Land Rover Defender is used by the Civil Defence service on the island of Guernsey. On the roof is an amber light bar, a green rotating beacon and a white searchlight. Green flashing beacons are permitted on Guernsey for all voluntary emergency services when responding to calls, including when travelling to their base for a call out.

11785, 11784 In this action shot, two motorbikes are escorting a large load using red flashing lights. They are both Honda Deuvilles belonging to Guernsey Outriders (a division of St Peter Port Service Ltd) who have a contract with the Guernsey government to provide vehicle escort services.



A closer look at one of the escort motorbikes. The company operate three motorbikes and a marked-up van. All use red flashing lights all-round.



The rear view. The riders are all special constables, trained in the specific role they carry out only. This gives them the power to direct traffic on Guernsey narrow winding roads.

Red flashing lights were chosen as the police weren’t keen on blues being used and ambers would not have the desired impact to stop oncoming traffic quickly. A change in law was implemented to make the front-facing red flashing lights legal.
