PN57 UHJ This Volvo FL240 is self explanatory: the wording on the side says it is a ‘Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service Driver Training’ unit.

BV57 GLJ Lincolnshire operate this MAN / Ziegler appliance out of Lincoln South.

C937 BKJ This ex-Nottinghamshire Dennis fire appliance is seen here stripped of most of its livery and with its blue lights covered up. After this photograph was taken it underwent a transformation into a mobile car wash vehicle.

OU58 CMF Buckinghamshire FRS use this Mitsubishi Outlander as an urban search and rescue vehicle.

J33840 A Man / JDC rescue pump that is operated out of St Hellier by Jersey FRS. It is one of 8 fire appliance that cover the island.

YJ60 FOH A North Yorkshire FRS Land Rover descends a steep cobbled slope to launch the fire boat it carries on a trailer.

PKZ 4844 This Browns / Volvo FL250 is the only fire engine on the island of Rathlin, off the North Antrim Coast, Northern Ireland. It is seen here exiting the Rescue Station which is shared with the Coastguard.

The rear view of the appliance. It holds the claim of being the only fire appliance in Northern Ireland to be based on an island. It is manned by a fully retained volunteer crew who spend two hours per week training. However sometimes a full year can pass without any call outs. If back-up was required at a call, this could take about an hour to come by car ferry from the mainland.

This specialist Iveco 65C16 fire vehicle is operated in conjunction with Qinetiq. It is a Remote Operated Vehicle Response Team vehicle. It carries personnel and robotic vehicles to major incidents as part of Project GHOST. GHOST stands for Gas cylinder Hazardous Operations Scientific Team.

The team are on call 24 hours per day and are dispatched by London Fire Brigade to any incident in the UK within four hours drive. This covers all of Wales and England as far North as Leeds.

YD12 ZSR, YD12 ZST, YD12 ZSG, YD12 ZSJ, YD12 ZSX London Fire Brigade was loaned five MINI Coopers by BMW for the 2012 Olympics. These cars were used in and around Olympic venues for rapid response as well as routine work. They carry equipment capable of putting out small fires. Inkeeping with the multinational event, “fire” is written on the side of the cars in five foreign languages.

In addition to these five, Dorset were given one similar MINI for use at the Weymouth and Portland Olympic venues. This is a Countryman four wheel drive model, registration YD12 ZSY.

Sark Fire Brigade operate three fire trailers on the small island in the Channel Islands. One is seen here being pulled by a privately owned tractor of the chief fire officer Kevin Adams. Motor vehicles are not permitted on the island, except for tractors required for work.



A side-on look at the tractor-trailer combination. The trailer has two equipment lockers, jaws of life, lights, pump, hose reel, lengths of hose and short-reach ladders. There are no high-rise buildings on the island and no street lights.

This unregistered Ford Ranger is ‘Fire 27’, a service support unit with Guernsey Fire and Rescue. Front-line fire vehicles are exempt from the need to show a registration plate on Guernsey.

YJ59 FLE This Volvo FL with bodywork by JDC is based at Acomb in York.

The jaws of life are pneumatically controlled cutters and spreaders powered by a small engine and carried on all front-line rescue pumps.

T958 MEF This Volvo FL6 was 13 years old when spotted at an exercise at North Yorkshire FRS’s training centre.

V782 CAJ A North Yorks Volvo FL6 exits Masham’s retained fire station.

WX54 VTT Prime Mover 180 is a Man / Marshall truck that carries additional hoses for a high volume pumping unit. It allows greater amounts of water to be directed to a major fire scene.

AE07 HVW This Mercedes Rescue Pump is part of London Fire Brigade. Here you can see it parked up outside a block of flats. On the side there is an advertisement on fitting and testing smoke alarms.

YJ60 EKN This JDC / Volvo is with North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service. This appliance is fitted with a winch on the front and is manned by a crew of 5 or 6.

AG09 YPP This Land Rover was manufactured in 2009 and is used by West Midlands Fire & Rescue Service.

V70 LVO This is a Volvo V70 Auto that was manufactured in 2002. This is used by Cheshire Fire & Rescue service and is part of the ATACC – Anaesthesia, Trauma and Critical Care – team.



This is a front view of the vehicle displaying the FIRE markings and the unusual storage container on the top. A Volvo with the same registration used to be liveried as a Doctor car with ATACC.

KX09 JHK This is a Scania P340 manufactured in 2009 and used by Northamptonshire. This fire engine is an Aerial Rescue Pump, with the rear bodywork lowered to accommodate the hydraulic rescue equipment above.

KD54 FHY This rapid intervention fire car is operated by Site Fire & Medical Services.

WX54 VPT This is Prime Mover 124 carrying Urban Search and Rescue pod 4. It is assigned to London Fire Brigade.

NX05 FVA This Land Rover Defender has been extended to carry equipment for its role as a Water Rescue Unit with Cleveland Fire Brigade.

A key asset to the rescue unit is this Valiant rigid inflatable boat with Mercury engine. It carries blue flashing lights and is called Wrighty.

NX53 AZD This Volvo FH12 is used by North Yorkshire FRS for displaying road safety messages and driver training.

KX10 BHK This Mitsubishi L200 is a fire car with Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service. Notice the bespoke roof structure, which includes folding floodlights.

KX58 LWN This is a Scania fire appliance which is with Cambridgeshire. It is shown here in standard fire markings. Notice that the website address is written prominently on the sides where the name of the fire service would usually be placed.

RX04 BUP This is a Mercedes Atego DPL1170 from the London Fire Brigade. It is used as a pump and ladder appliance.

YJ58 XEB This Land Rover is operated by North Yorkshire FRS and is used for tasks such as responding to moorland emergencies. It has blue lights on the roof and front grille and chunky wheels for off-road calls. In this photograph it is towing a trailer that was carrying an old car for firefighters to practice extrications.

VE10 TZO This is a private fire van that is a black Volkswagen Transporter. It displaying amber lights as well as blue. The amber lights can be used for airfield operations or when stopped in a vulnerable position on the road.

VN54 WUX is with Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue. This Mercedes Vito is one of the fire vans used for carrying equipment while doing community projects and training other services like St. John Ambulance.

SC56 FGK This car has been converted into a fire car from a normal Vauxhall. Fire cars are generally used for the incident commander or senior officer and at events.

MX06 YBY In this demonstration, a fire service DIM vehicle (Detection, Identification and Monitoring) forms the backdrop of a decontamination scene. Two ambulance medics are in full protective suits and are looking over a casualty found next to an unknown substance.

LG59 LUO This BMW X5 Angloco demonstrator has a Nightscan telescopic floodlight on the roof.

This is a concept fire vehicle that is based on an Iveco. It is produced by Chameleon and is used for fire response work in hostile environments. The cab is surrounded by a strong cage structure with a red and blue flashing light on top. The rear tips and the fold-down sides have battenburg markings on both sides.



A close up of what you would expect to be a water monitor on the roof. It is in fact a 7.62mm General Purpose Machine Gun! The vehicle has the capability for this gun to be mounted and used, but use in the UK is very unlikely.

This 1997 Jaguar XJ8 was specially built to support the Thrust SSC land speed record attempt. At the time it was regarded as the fastest fire engine on the planet. The rear seats have been removed to accommodate the foam tank.

RDU 941W This is a Jaguar XJ12 which was built to be used as a support vehicle for the Thrust 2 land speed record attempt. It is a 5.3 litre V12 built in 1982. After the successful record attempt, the vehicle saw further service at Silverstone race circuit.

HX58 CNV This is a West Sussex JDC / Scania P270.

WX59 GWG This is an Iveco Daily Incident Command unit that is operated by Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service. Inside is an array of high resolution mapping systems and digital radio and tracking equipment to enable the senior fire officer to control serious incidents in the county of Wiltshire. Notice the red ends to the roof light bar, as this is one of the few vehicles on UK roads that is allowed to show red light to the front.

NK60 ASU This MacNellie / Mercedes Sprinter van is used by Northumberland FRS for Swift Water Rescues.

KR02 CMY This is an overhead shot of a Surrey Volvo fire appliance responding to an emergency call in Guildford.

KS57 PWL A demonstration Vauxhall Astra fire car.

This is a brand new unregistered Scania P280 fire appliance.

ECV 854V This is a Landrover Series III 109 which has been converted into a fire vehicle by Charmichael. It is part of the Isles of Scilly Fire Service’s fleet based on the island of St. Martins. It is a front line appliance, the only one on the island, despite it’s age of 31 years when photographed in 2011.

The rear view. It has no battenburg markings or even a stripe down the side. Two small blue strobe lights are fitted on the roof along with two tone horns and ladders.

A closer look at the passenger door. An old livery for Cornwall County Fire Brigade is shown, despite the vehicle belonging to the Isles of Scilly Fire Service. This is because the Islands broke away from Cornwall for fire provision and the vehicle has not been re-liveried. This made it the smallest statutory fire service in the UK and is operated on a 100% retained basis.

WK56 AOY is a Toyota Hilux rapid response fire car used on the Isles of Scilly.

HX10 CKJ This is a Citroen Relay that is used as a Community Contact Point by Hampshire Fire.

E802 FTM This Land Rover Defender is a preserved Royal Air Force fire service vehicle. It is fitted with amber and blue flashing beacons on the roof.

GMN 999D The Isle of Man’s fire service operate this Ford Transit display vehicle. It is decked out with pictures of fires and safety messages. On the roof of the cab are two double blue flashing lights.

KX09 BKL This is a JDC / Scania P310 fire vehicle which is used by Northamptonshire. It is a welfare unit, providing catering and toilet facilities to firefighters spending a protracted time at an incident. The rear pod can be demounted from the chassis using the hook-lift.

MX56 OLP is the site fire appliance used by the Company Protection team at the Land Rover site in Lode Lane, Solihull. It is staffed by a team who provide security, medical and fire cover on the large site. Other vehicles used but not seen here include several Land Rover Defender patrol vehicles and a Lazer-bodied Ford Transit ambulance which is kitted to the same level an NHS frontline vehicle.

Here are Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service using an aerial ladder platform to practice a rescue at a multi-storey car park.

SN09 BJY This is a Lothian and Borders FRS Emergency One / Scania P270.

This JDC / Scania R340 appliance is unregistered and is seen here prior to going into service with Northamptonshire.

PN08 PSO Lancashire FRS operates this Loglogic Softrak tracked vehicle for off-road fire fighting duties. In the rear is basic fire kit including a water tank and hose. There are also three rearward facing seats. It is towed on a trailer by an Isuzu Easyshift, registration KE07 EHJ (not shown).

This unregistered JDC / Scania P310 is photographed here before coming into service with Northamptonshire. It is a water carrier and was temporarily running with trade plate 513 PC.

This unregistered Land Rover 90 is part of Silverstone’s fire fighting fleet. It carries the corporate livery and is fitted with a full-width blue light bar.

P73 HHP This Dennis Sabre appliance is privately owned by a company called Sharp Fire. It is used at large events that have been judged to have a high fire risk as part of the risk assessment. It was previously a front-line appliance in Warwickshire.

FE07 SZF This is a Toyota Hilux that is used for fire cover at Silverstone motor racing circuit in Northamptonshire. It is one of a number of dedicated fire vehicles that are placed around the edge of the circuit to quickly respond to motor vehicle fires and collisions during races.

HMN-571-L This is a Steyr Damlier Puch / Saxon / Pinzgauer light six-wheel drive pump. It is one of a number that are operated by the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service. It is ideal for accessing the moorland in the middle of the island that has few roads across it.

NK51 VXR A Durham and Darlington Mercedes Benz Sprinter in white. The van is used as a water rescue unit.

L202 ANL This is a rescue tender used by Tyne and Wear FRS. Built by Volvo / HCB Angus it was new in 1994 and was still in use for front line duties in 2010.

NK51 BWY This is a Tyne and Wear Volvo / Emergency One appliance that is based at Birtley. It is carrying adverts for fire safety produced by schoolchildren on the lockers.

NK51 XXC This is Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service’s Command Support Unit. It has been specially built from a Dennis Dart bus and is based at West Denton station. It has national call sign (FA)T24C1.

ND07 FSJ This Ford Transit is used by Tyne and Wear for hydrant maintenance duties.

NK03 BZD is a Mercedes Benz Vito support van used by Tyne and Wear FRS. It carries eye-catching graphics to highlight the fire safety messages.

RA03 YFA This is a Ford Transit that is used for personnel transportation. It is part of Chopwell Young Firefighters in the Tyne and Wear brigade area. A collection of local sponsors is shown down each side, including The Phoenix Club, Salt and Battery & Jo Jo’s Balloon Company.

NK10 DHF This Volvo FLL / John Dennis appliance is in service with Tyne and Wear FRS. It is based at Gosforth, now known as Newcastle North Community Fire Station.

NG55 LDD Durham and Darlington operate a number of these dark red three-litre Isuzu Rodeos.

NK06 NNZ This is a white Land Rover Defender that is in service with Durham and Darlington. It has fire and rescue wording on the side, bonnet and air vents. It is fitted with a snorkel for the engine to get air when travelling through deep water.

NK09 HEU This MAN / JDC is with Durham and Darlington.

N119 OTN This Land Rover Defender is used by Durham and Darlington. Despite it’s status being evident to most motorists, it doesn’t have any “fire” wording clearly displayed from this angle.

NK04 YMY is one of Durham and Darlington’s Land Rover Defender pick-ups.

WX54 VST This is a Prime Mover (PM 162) that is part of the New Dimension fleet. This appliance is assigned to Tyne and Wear and is a MAN / Marshall Special Vehicles, seen here at North Moor station.

Z-999-MAN This Mini is used by the Isle of Man Fire Brigade as a publicity vehicle. All of the bodywork is given over to flame effects and their sponsor’s logo Zurich Insurance. Small blue flashing light are fitted to the front grille and rear parcel shelf.

JMN-999 This silver Ford Focus is used by the fire service on the Isle of Man. Complete with its appropriate “999” registration plate this can is shown outside Douglas Fire Station in the capital of the island.

999-EMN This is another silver Ford Focus used by the IoM fire service personnel.

NL09 CVW This Ford Ranger is with Durham and Darlington FRS.

FJ59 BBF Here we have a Scania P340 water carrier used by Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service which is based at Loughborough

BU56 DYC is a MAN based appliance used by the West Midlands Fire Service, based at Ward End, Birmingham.

This Renault based Fire Incident Command Vehicle demonstrator has been produced by Kinetic Specialist Vehicles and Plastisol UK.
