This Spanish-built appliance was new to the fleet in 2018. It cost £400,000 and is smaller than more established 6×6 airport fire tenders. It weighs 24 tonnes compared to the older 32 tonne trucks. This means that it uses less fuel and has better acceleration (0-50 mph in 23 seconds). It is also more suited to the islands narrow winding roads when off-airfield.

Fire 6. It has a top speed in excess of 70 mph and can accelerate from 0-50 mph in under 35 seconds. Compared to a car this is slow, but it weighs 46 tons and is over 13m long. It has a 700 bhp engine and carries 12,000 litres of water and a further 1,700 litres of foam.

B551 RLP This is a custom-made Boughton fire and rescue appliance used at Tresco Heliport. It has a foam monitor on the roof and very high-profile tyres.





The front view. Notice how the headlights have been moved to the bumper and their previous location replaced with blue flashing lights.





The rear view. In three corners of the roof are blue rotating beacons, and in one an amber beacon.

SY58 CEU The Scottish Highland and Islands Airports Fire Service operate this Carmichael / Land Rover at Barra Airport. It has had the body extended to accommodate equipment lockers and ladders, meaning the addition of a second rear axle. The reason for having this unusual vehicle is because the main runway is a tidal beach. A heavier vehicle would struggle to drive on the sand.
