A BMW M1 police interceptor concept. The matt black bodywork is left partially exposed, and the front is covered with large yellow and blue livery to match the battenburg down each side. In addition to the usual blue flashing lights on the roof, grille and wings, there is a triple-width flashing light mounted on the dashboard.

The freshly-washed car. With its 1.2 litre turbo diesel engine, the car is described by its driver as sluggish. This is particularly apparent when trying to make progress on a blue light run on winding country roads. It has a very low mileage for a police car due to its unpopularity with officers.

YJ10 HTX A North Yorks Audi A4 Quattro speeds off a dual carriageway with blue lights flashing. Spray from heavy rain is left in its wake.



The car now has rear reds flashing and scrolling arrows to direct traffic around a stricken vehicle (not shown). A Highway Agency incident unit has already started to deploy road cones to further help protect the scene.

YJ60 FAA North Yorkshire’s crime scene investigation police staff use this Ford Transit Connect when attending crime scenes. It has no blue lights fitted.

YJ13 EWY A 2013 addition to North Yorkshire’s fleet is this Vauxhall Vivaro. In the rear portion is a cell for transporting detainees. The rear passenger seat is facing the cell to keep a close watch on its occupants.

YJ13 EWU This is one of a pair of prisoner transport vans that were introduced to North Yorkshire’s fleet in early 2013. It is an Iveco Daily with a three-litre diesel engine.

YJ13 EXD A North Yorkshire Vauxhall Astra. It is the 1.3 CDTI Ecoflex model, with the frugal engine returning 72 mpg. A fleet of identical vehicles was introduced to the county’s roads in March 2013.

YJ12 SZO BMW put together this Mini Cooper D police beach patrol car for promotional use only. It has fleet number ‘Five-o’.

This Vauxhall Vectra is having its police livery applied for the first time. All of the pieces are numbered and their position determined by the blueprint shown. Graphics specialists RVG are showing two subtly different materials for the rear chevrons.

On the side of the car, the pieces are tacked in place before being more permanently attached. The back peels off the coloured panels and they are then carefully returned to their space. Air bubbles are squeezed out using a credit-card style tool.

The dogs may be left in the car for quite some time unattended. The engine can be left running to power the air conditioning using the runlock system. If anyone attempts to drive the vehicle off, the engine will cut out immediately.

K414 SHR Ovik have converted this ex-MOD Land Rover Defender into a heavily armoured vehicle. Despite being 19 years old at the time, the mileage is surprisingly low from its minimal MOD use.

This heavily armoured police vehicle is a bespoke build from the chassis up called an Ovik Stagg. It is a prototype and was built because starting off with a regular vehicle and then making it armoured would always lead to compromises.

VX62 CVH This is a 2012 Vauxhall Astra 1.2 CDTI that is used by Staffordshire Police for general patrols.

SV62 APF This is a Grampian Police Underwater Search Unit. It carries a basic generic police livery. This is because it was new towards the end of 2012 and would soon transfer to Police Scotland from April 2013. It is more cost effective to run it without Grampian logos for a few months.

BU60 BZL A Met Police Range Rover. It is the HSE TDV8 model with a 3.6 litre engine. The diesel engine produces 268 bhp and returns an average fuel economy of 25 mpg. Despite the car weighing nearly 3.2 tonnes, it can accelerate 0-60 mph in under 9 seconds and continue on to 130 mph.

EK10 EEU A Northumbria Police Ford Transit Connect with a sister vehicle behind. The front van has a clear half-width light bar with repeaters above the windscreen and in the grille. The van behind has gone for the two full-width blue light bars option.
