BX58 PFK, BU12 AHJ Here is a Metropolitan Police Vauxhall Astra in front of a Hyundai i30. Both vehicle have their blue and red flashing lights showing as they are stopped at a major junction. The Astra has been involved in a minor collision with a truck.

The damage on the front offside of the Astra is quite superficial.



The damage on the rear nearside of the truck is also minor.

BG58 VEK This is the first safety camera van used by North Yorkshire Police. It is a Ford Transit and was introduced in 2011 as a trial to target speeding and accident blackspots.

WX54 VTT Prime Mover 180 is a Man / Marshall truck that carries additional hoses for a high volume pumping unit. It allows greater amounts of water to be directed to a major fire scene.

WX07 NWB This Mercedes truck is marked in British Transport Police livery. It is actually a re-liveried railway response vehicle. This truck carries equipment to Underground stations to fix urgent track problems. The report into the 7/7 Bombings suggested these vehicles were given blue lights to aid their passage in emergencies. This would have required a change in legislation, so this vehicle has been re-designated as a police vehicle and is driven by a police officer.



The same Mercedes Benz Atego truck is its previous livery, prior to February 2012. It is operated by Tubelines to provide an emergency response to incidents on the London Underground and is based at Camden.

LJ05 FHU One of London Ambulance’s rapid response Honda ST1300s lights up the night with flashing blue lights. The bike is parked at the roadside while the rider paramedic attends an emergency call indoors. Leaving the flashing lights on means that the ambulance attending can quickly identify the location and the bike is unlikely to be towed away for parking on a red route.

This is a Pangolin ALR Mk.IV that is used by the PSNI in Northern Ireland. The vehicle is heavily armoured and all lighting has grillwork to protect it. It was introduce to the fleet in 2011 to begin to replace the aging Tangi Land Rovers.

V70 LVO This is a Volvo V70 Auto that was manufactured in 2002. This is used by Cheshire Fire & Rescue service and is part of the ATACC – Anaesthesia, Trauma and Critical Care – team.



This is a front view of the vehicle displaying the FIRE markings and the unusual storage container on the top. A Volvo with the same registration used to be liveried as a Doctor car with ATACC.

91-D-48541 This Land Rover is used By Dublin Civil Defence as a Fire and Flood Response vehicle as part of the Auxillary Fire Service. This is one of several 4×4 response vehicles in use with DCD. They are called upon during severe weather or as requested by Dublin Fire Brigade, HSE or the Gardaí for assistance. Most carry portable pumps, sand bags and suction in the rear, some are kitted out as ambulance vehicles. The one pictured can do both.

YH11 LMU This Land Rover Discovery 4 is used at the Tyne Tunnel …



YH11 LMU This Land Rover Discovery 4 is used at the Tyne Tunnel as a Tunnel Patrol vehicle. It is operated by a company called TT2 who run the four tunnels under the River Tyne in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. In the background is the River Tyne and one of the North Portals into the tunnel.



The rear view. Notice the blue flashing light bar, with the option of red-only to the rear. The Discovery’s livery is designed to compliment the TT2 company logo.



Inside the rear are equipment including fire extinguishers and a skate. In years gone by, the team would be primarily focussed on fire fighting and carried a lot of firefighing equipment. The introduction of a tunnel misting system to put fires out removed the need for this today.

LD08 OMJ This Land Rover Discovery 3 is “Tunnel 1” and is used to patrol the Tyne Tunnels. On the front are two large black pads. These rubber pads are used to push broken-down vehicles out of the tunnel. The soft rubber avoids any damage. This system is preferred to towing vehicles a few hundred metres to get them out of the tunnel.
